THE END IS AMOST HERE!
In just a few short days we will close out the 2017/2018 school term and begin a summer of fun and sun and relaxation! It is often a burden though for some parents to keep their children engaged and academically stimulated over the ten week break. Besides reading a "good ole' book with real paper pages, below you will find several electronic resources that might just be the answer to your child's boredom.

I would also suggest that you investigate your child's learning style. Most of our gifted students have had the opportunity to complete an interest and learning style inventory here at school so ask them and together try to target activities and projects that will satisfy their innate desire to learn as well as motivate them to be an active participant in their quest exciting things to do.
Most of all, I hope you will enjoy some time together as a family. Spend some time in the kitchen baking homemade cookies ( from scratch), go camping, and cook your dinner over an open campfire, or play some games that will foster creative and critical thinking skills. There are many simple and inexpensive things that you can do together. Children often tell me that they just wish they had time to hang out with their parents so make an effort to do just that. Find out what they are interested in and you will be surprised that it is probably something very different than they said this time last year.
As always, thank you for the opportunity to learn along side if your child. It is a blessing and a privilege to teach such amazingly bright children and have an amazing group of supportive parents like yourselves. Thank you and enjoy these days ahead.

We had a super day today for Field Day! Thank you so much for all of you parents who came out to cheer on our students! Mrs. Novak and Mrs. Dillon did a great job organizing the grade level t-shirts.
As we begin to look for activities to keep our children's minds growing over the summer, I would encourage you all to check out the Georgia Association for Gifted Children at www.Gagc.org. There, you will find lots of resources to enrich the education of you child.
Their purpose is to:
- To promote an awareness of the needs of Georgia's gifted students
- To stimulate among educational administrators, teachers, parents, legislators, the business community, and others of the general public, a deeper understanding of and interest in the needs of the gifted.
- To provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among the organization.
- To encourage and stimulate the best possible training for gifted educators.
- To encourage and stimulate research in the area of gifted education, particularly in the State of Georgia.

Rainbow over MHES

As we move forward through these next few weeks, lets finish this school year out like the beautiful colors of a rainbow.
They always bring a smile to my face especially when I see one after a heavy rain. They make us appreciate the sunshine even more after a few days of cloudiness. GMAS is over and the summer is fast approaching. Lets celebrate our accomplishments in the spirit of a colorful rainbow.

2018 GMAS Testing begins Wednesday, April 11 for 3-5th grade!
Please make sure your child gets a good nights rest and a healthy breakfast. It is a good idea to stress the importance of these test and encourage them to just do their best. As Dr. Seuss says, "You know what you know." They are prepared and ready. Communicate to them that this is a great time for them to show what they know!

Stock Market Game
The fifth graders are focused on making wise investments as they play the Stock Market Game! We have seen excellent research skills develop as they gather data for making decisions about buying and selling stocks. Teamwork also plays an important role in this learning unit. We will continue this activity through April 13 when the Georgia Council on Economic Education will examine the portfolios of all of the participating teams to determine the winners of the game. They will look for students who followed all rules of the game (ask your student!) and have the highest portfolio value based on their weeks of trading. The teams we are working with are definitely in the hunt for the top spot! J

Quiz Bowl Win! Our lower grades Quiz Bowl team takes all!
We are so excited to announce that our second and third grade team not only won the East Zone district competition for the Georgia Books Awards reading bowl, but we also won FIRST PLACE in the entire Savannah-Chatham district! WOW! These students really worked hard. As one parent can be quoted as saying, "Favor follows the prepared." This small but mighty team worked so hard to prepare themselves for each and every opponent they faced. May Howard Elementary faced twenty one schools and rose to victory! Thank you to the parents and classroom teachers of these students who helped us along the way. It is my personal pleasure to coach each and everyone of these bright students. Coach Cail

Our third graders have really enjoyed learning about ancient Egyptian culture. Here a student demonstrates how a model shaduf helped the people bring water up to use for cooking and drinking.
New Rug !
Thanks to our awesome PTA we have a new rug! In fact each of our gifted resource classrooms received new rugs thanks to their generosity. We have enjoyed being able to sit around and study our Quiz Bowl books as we prepare for competition.
Studying about Egypt was great fun!
