2. What other ways can a student be nominated for gifted testing?
- Referral of potentially gifted students enrolled in Savannah-Chatham Public Schools can be made by classroom teachers, counselors, administrators, parents, or self.
- Also, if a child in grades 3-5 scores at the Distinguished Level in English Language Arts or Mathematics on the GMAS, along with a qualifying rating of 90% or higher on the GRS (Gifted Rating Scale for Motivation) from the classroom teacher, he/she can be nominated for gifted testing.
3. What happens after my child is nominated for gifted testing?
- The gifted specialist will gather testing data from the PR, work with the child in a small enrichment group to obtain further work samples, and complete the Nominations Packet to be taken to the Nominations Committee. The committee will review each student’s packet and MAP scores to determine if they are good candidates for testing at that time.
- Teachers will be notified of the committee’s recommendations, and the parents of students who have been approved for testing will receive a Consent for Evaluation letter to sign.
4. How can I nominate my child for gifted testing?
- Notify your child’s teacher that you would like to nominate your child for gifted testing. The teacher will contact the gifted specialist to request the nomination form. Parents will be given a two page document to complete that describes characteristics they feel their children exhibit that show giftedness.
- When the completed form is returned, the same steps are followed as with teacher nominations: teacher will complete GRS, work samples will be gathered, and test data will be analyzed. The Nominations Packet will be submitted to the School Nominations Committee for review. Teachers and parents will be notified after the meeting as to the recommendations for testing.
